The movie industry is good at spinning up love stories; I think in almost every movie, there is a romance story involved. Yes, there's an entire genre devoted to it but it's also present in action flicks, thrillers, etc. What makes these pair ups work is that the actors sell the romance on screen: chemistry. Aided by the back story of the characters and where the plot is going, romance pairings usually work. For all the romance the film industry feeds us, I'm sure that there's a pair or two that we like. So, in keeping up with the love-themed posts this week, here are some of my favorite movie pairings.
James McAvoy and Keira Knightley in Atonement
Robbie and Cecilia are lovers who were separated due to jealousy. I haven't read the book but I was rooting for them to get back together (and I had a budding annoyance at Brionna Talis, played by Saorsie Ronan). We all know how this ends (if you haven't watched it, there you go!), but even Brionna was hoping that everything would turn out different, that they will get reunited.
Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley in Pirates of the Caribbean
A love story that spawned through three films and technically, for eternity. Will and Elizabeth first met when Will was rescued, and when we met them as grown ups, Will was already harboring feelings for Elizabeth. Their love story took an epic turn in the third film, when Will stabbed the heart of Davy Jones and became the next Davy Jones, only able to surface after ten years. While their best scenes were (honestly) with Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow, the franchise wrapped up their story quite nicely, although we still had to watch Orlando Bloom die. Their marriage scene was pretty funny though.
Steve Carell and Tina Fey in Date Night
Ok, maybe I wouldn't have liked them so much if they were different people. This was the movie where Liz Lemon and Michael Scott were finally paired off! Steve Carell does translate differently in movies compared to his television show, which complimented Tina Fey's Liz Lemon (she will never not be like Liz Lemon in her movies). They were a couple who wanted out of their rut…and they got more what they bargained for. For the movies that simply show the two leads get together and that's that, movies like Date Night and This Is 40 explore the 'what happens after the happily ever after' part. They should get paired up on television, but I have a feeling that an explosion of awesomeness will happen and it would just be too overpowering.
Mathieu Kassovitz and Audrey Tautou in Amelie
They barely exchanged a word and yet they are so cute together. I can't imagine anyone else playing their roles and pulling it off. While writing this, I was suddenly reminded of the How I Met Your Mother episode and how such events can turn out to be stalker-ish, but the way Amelie played out, it was more of cute rather than stalker. Plus, the way she's making him go in circles, in dropping a meeting place via a photo so she can observe him is cute; Amelie made it interesting to meet Nino.
Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones in Like Crazy
These two would cross the Atlantic just to be together. What started out as a whirlwind romance ended in a battle between keeping the commitment or being happy. Jacob and Anna has been through a lot of drama in hopes of making their relationship work. They were their best during their whirlwind romance. They had on-screen chemistry, and I think most long distance relationships can relate to the troubles they went through.
Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet in Titanic
The greatest love of all time. It wouldn't be number one that long (the same director topped this with Avatar). From two worlds apart, Jack and Rose met on the ship, and their love crossed their worlds. Although the ship came tumbling down, and Jack died due to the cold (and the fact that Rose won't share the humongous plank she was on), her love for him never wavered. You know how some people have that one true love, but they don't really marry them, or are still together with them? Jack may be in Rose's past, but her love was always there. Cut to the end scene of the film.
Viggo Mortesen and Liv Tyler in Lord of the Rings
This would definitely be included in one of my favorite couples in the big screen. A love story spanned through three films, they were about to be separated (to save Arwen from dying) when she saw another future, a future with Aragorn and her son. Even at battle, Aragorn's feelings for Arwen did not waver, although it did look like he was sending signals to Eowyn. The scene when Aragorn and Arwen finally see each other again = golden! I guess his love for Arwen is keeping his spirits alive, as he never took off the evenstar she gave him.
